Right, ok, so ... I bump into someone I haven't seen for a while, they ask me how I am and where I have been etc, so naturally I informed them of the fact that I was on crutches for 3 weeks and all the recent and tragic happenings that have been based around my work place ...
The response was odd, and after telling them such awful and eye-opening news, I hold my hands up, I was expecting more! The response was as follows: "Shit, how come I didn't see anything on Facebook? I was wondering why I haven't seen you in ages, but assumed you were ok as I haven't noticed any status' that say otherwise" ... Right, so, there are a few things wrong with this ...
1. I'm all for people using Facebook, I use it, let's face it, everyone does, but if you are wondering how I am, don't look at my Facebook page, you will find nothing that will tell you how I am! I DON'T broadcast every emotion I'm feeling or everything that happens to me. Why? Because it's Facebook!
2. If I'm ever sad or down, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to tell via facebook. Why? Because it's Facebook!
3. I'm not against people expressing themselves (clearly) but personally, I can't stand seeing all these status' that are full of negativity and depression, why would you want everyone to see your vulnerability, is it even real? Are you actually upset? I don't know anymore! Why? Because it's Facebook!
4. I've seen status' that contain alot of information about people's personal life's, I've seen those exact people moaning because people gossip about their life and get involved in their business - what do you expect? You're essentially welcoming that, and in some sick way you're probably loving the fact that everyone's attention is on you ... You finally did it! ... after several weeks of expressing how terrible your life is!
Grow the fuck up! Everyone has problems, everyone is skint from time to time, we don't live in movie land, this is real life, what happened to inner strength and positivity?!?! I think it's there in everyone, just depends if you enjoy self-loathing or attention from people on Facebook that only seem to care when you put up those ever so cryptic status' about how you hate your life.
5. If there's something wrong with me, I will speak to my friends.
Have we really lost touch with how to communicate as functioning human beings - we're so lucky to have this short life and have conscious thought and have the ability to make changes in other peoples lives. Why, as soon as something goes wrong, is all this forgotten?
There are people that are genuinely suffering out there, people fighting for their life, fighting for survival with no food, no money, no house, no family, no friends, and NO FACEBOOK!
Why don't I write my problems and feelings on Facebook? Because its Facebook!
